Hike to Raven Cliff Falls while in North Georgia

If you are staying in Blue Ridge, Blairsville, or the surrounding north Georgia mountains, take time to hike the Raven Cliff Falls Trail during your stay. There are plenty of waterfalls and rapids to view as you walk along this gentle trail.

The Raven Cliff Falls trail is located off of GA 348 between Blairsville and Helen, GA. This hike is a relatively easy hike, with gentle slopes, 5 miles round trip. This trail is rate as one of the best short hikes in the state of Georgia. Rarely will the trail will be further than 50′ away from the creek with its beautiful waterfalls and rapids.

The waterfalls that you will see while hiking are almost too numerous to count. I think I was in waterfall overload by the time we got back to our truck, I think we just glanced at several and kept walking.

I would recommend this hike for a family adventure while you are staying with us at Sundance Cabin Rentals. The hike is slightly uphill on the way in, making for a very easy hike back out. There is plenty to see and hear along the creek, be sure to bring snacks and water with you for your hike!

Along the sides of the trail, there were many varieties of blooming wildflowers for your amazement and enjoyment. There are plenty of Rhododendrons along the creek, getting ready for their big show very soon.

Please keep an eye on your young children on this hike, there are plenty of exciting and interesting things that they will want to explore, some could be dangerous, depending upon their age and abilities. Sometimes on the weekend, this trail can become crowded and finding a parking space at the Raven Cliff Fall Trailhead can be a challenge, but it is definately worth the drive. This is becoming one of our family favorites, we will be sharing it with all of our friends and family who visit us here in north Georgia.

4th of July in Blue Ridge – You Better Get Moving!

There is always plenty to do in and around Blue Ridge, GA for the 4th of July holiday, parades, fireworks, adventure on the water and so much more! But you better get moving with your plans if you are looking for a cabin rental in Blue Ridge for the 4th of July, the cabins are filling up quickly! Sundance Cabin Rentals should be your first stop for your great family vacation.

There are fireworks on both July 3rd and July 6th this year. McCaysville is having their 4th of July fireworks on the 3rd, and you can even ride the Blue Ridge Scenic Railroad up to McCaysville for the celebration!

On July 6th, celebrate again with the 4th of July parade in downtown Blue Ridge and the fireworks on Lake Blue Ridge that evening.

Have we seen the last of the snow yet here in Blue Ridge, Georgia? I’m not sure I can answer that question. One thing is certain though…warmer weather has slithered in and the folks here in this town are enjoying the change-myself included! For those of you who love nothing more than to bait a hook-the North Georgia Mountains offers some of the best trout fishing. If you’re itching to make your way up to these parts, planning is essential. Think 3 months in advance and by the time May or June arrives thee will be plenty of places to throw in your line.

One place I’m thinking of is The Trout Adventure Trail, where individual hikers, families, and groups can hike. Once you’ve booked your cabin with us, why not take a trip to the Trout Adventure Trail? The Trout Adventure is located in the wilderness of the Chattahoochee National Forest which encompasses Gilmer County and Fannin County (the trout capital of Georgia). This exciting adventure trail travels the national forest for around an hour and a half. Whether it’s the speckled trout you’re interested in or you just want to hike the trail-there something for the whole family to enjoy!

The kids will love earning an official patch for a hike well done. And…if you go along with kids you can earn a patch as well. For camp lovers- there are all types of sites ready for you to pitch a tent or your camper. Let’s face it- a trip to the mountains won’t be a trip to the mountains unless you go hiking or do some real fishing. Experience Spring in the Mountains- You’ll Have a Gem Good Time!

Once again Mother Nature has waved her magic wand ….sprinkling a blanket of snow across the North Georgia Mountains. Schools were cancelled today as the children danced the Harlem Shake. The Weather Channel reports more snow is on the way, but that hasn’t stopped the robin red breasts playing in my front yard, or the blue birds camping out on my back porch. As I sipped my morning coffee, I noticed a large woodpecker getting his fair share of bark from one of my tress on the back yard. I’m sure my fair feathered friends are wondering when Mother Nature will tire from having the last laugh. But no matter what she intends to try and prove….her contender the North Wind will show her a thing or two. Spring will arrive and she will have to stomp her way into hiding for another few months.

In the mean time….what’s on the itinerary for your spring visit? With Spring break right around the corner, you might be wondering how to entertain the kids while you’re visiting our quaint little town. In Alaska they mine for gold, but here in Blue Ridge, Georgia we mine for gems. While you might not strike it rich, were certain that a day of gem mining will be something the whole family will enjoy! So…where can you go to experience some good old fashioned family fun? We suggest the Lily Pad located in the Aska Area in Blue Ridge, GA. You can spend the day gem mining here at the Lily Pad…but there is so much more to do if you visit The Lily Pad Village!

Have you ever played put-put golf in the mountains? The Lily Pad is one of the few places here in the North Georgia where you can play mini golf while enjoying the beautiful scenery of the mountains. Don’t forget to pack your fishing poles….the Lily Pad pond is full of catfish, bluegills, and bass for you’re your fishing enjoyment. If you forgot to bring your poles there’s no worry, you can always rent some poles at the Lily Pad! Treasure Hunting in the Blue Ridge Mountains

If you’re planning a trip to the North Georgia Mountains this spring maybe you should go on a treasure hunt. The days of old fashioned treasure hunts are a thing of the past. Today’s treasure hunts have advanced from a piece of paper to using GPS units to track down your treasure. Most folks have a smart phone which will help during the treasure hunt. This advanced treasure hunt is known as “Geocaching”, and you can experience this fun filled adventure right here in Blue Ridge, Georgia.

Here’s how you play the game: Using your GPS device, you’ll try and track down a cache that has been hidden. After you’ve located your cache you are eligible to participate in the fun and treasures hidden within. Once you’ve discovered the cache, you take something and then leave something of yours behind. You’ll also have the opportunity to sign a log book. Make sure to leave the cache well hidden and most importantly…be discreet! You don’t want to be seen leaving your cache behind! So…where can you go to experience all the fun?

There at least 21 different places you can go to experience this high tech treasure hunt. You can start out with a bang with the more difficult hunt at the swinging bridge in Blue Ridge, or you could use the self guided tour. If you’re a novice, it might not be such a bad idea to begin with this virtual cache. You’ll learn all you need to know about geocaching and be able to grab a spectacular view of the mountain river and the suspension bridge across it. Geocaching is more than a treasure hunt…it’s a fun way to discover spring in the Blue Ridge Mountains!

Take a Break- Spring is Right around the Corner

Yesterday I sat on my back porch and identified 5 different kinds of birds merrily chirping in the trees. Yes, spring is right around the corner and some of my feathered friends have already returned from their winter vacation. Soon it will be time to begin planting gardens and doing some spring cleaning. Although we might have a couple more cold snaps before it’s all said and done- the buzz is that we are going to have an early spring this year. And…the return of so many birds is another sign that spring is on its way to Blue Ridge, GA!

Things are going to perk up in this sleepy little town. As soon as March rolls in this quaint little town wakes up from a winters nap with a list of many things to do while you’re vacationing here. Did you know that our little town was once considered a health resort because of its pure mineral water? Folks would take the train into Blue Ridge just so they could experience dining at the Blue Ridge Hotel and walk to the Mineral Springs after their bellies were full. At one time there were 5 hotels and even boarding houses in downtown Blue Ridge. Today people from all over the world enjoy visiting our little town. Blue Ridge is the hot spot for antique shopping, art galleries, and country dining.

Planning a trip this spring? Beginning with the month of March here’s a few things you can look forward to when visiting our historic mountain town.

If you’re already snuggled into one of our cozy cabins you can always travel to the Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds to see Justin Moore in concert. This is only one of many concerts in March. If you’re a baby boomer like me you might be interested in seeing Three Dog Night on March 9^th. If you’d rather stay closer to town why not take in a movie the old fashioned way? Blue Ridge is one of the few towns that still have a drive-in movie theater. The Swan Drive In has been entertaining folks since 1955 and today offers digital projection. Enjoy a double feature with the gang for only $7.00 per person.

Our local community theater offers live entertainment…so be on the look out for upcoming events at: blueridgecommunitytheater.com. If you enjoy plays then you won’t want to miss “Rumors” beginning on March 7^th.

There are guided day hikes if you’re interested in experiencing nature first hand, and you can even grab some tips from hiking aficionados who braved the Appalachian Trail.

The big day here in our cozy little town is March 15^th. This is the day local merchants have waited for all winter- the Blue Ridge Scenic Railroad Season begins! Our little town comes alive with visitors from all over, and we look forward to sharing our special town and all of its charm with you. You can take the train to our neighboring town of McCayesville, GA. Shop till you drop at the quaint antique stores and have a bite to eat while the train stops for around 45 minutes.

Don’t let this little town fool you…there’s plenty to do while you’re here. Take in a show at the theater, grab some seats at a concert, take a trip back in time at our drive-in movie theater, or visit some wineries nearby for some wine tasting fun! Epic Dining in Blue Ridge

If you’re planning your next trip to Blue Ridge, you might want to know where you can dine for the evening. The North Georgia Mountains are full of ‘down home cooking’ restaurants, but the trick is finding that perfect place not too far from your cabin. If you travel to 8055 Aska Road in Blue Ridge you’ll discover the Toccoa Riverside Restaurant. Owned by Tim Richter, this restaurant met its maker last February 13, 2012 when it burnt to the ground. Less than one year later on February 8, 2013, this cozy dining establishment opened its doors once again – providing a quality dining experience for the public.

It’s time to plan for the spring, so booking your cabin ahead of time will ensure that you’ll get just the right getaway cabin for your North Georgia mountain experience. I think were going to have an early spring as we’ve had a pretty mild winter in these parts. Some of the birds have returned from whence they came and the lilies are blooming. It’s only a matter of time before spring arrives and you’ll be soaking in that hot tub in one of our quaint cabins enjoying all that Mother Nature has to offer. So go ahead and start vacation planning now. We know you can’t wait to travel to our beautiful town and see all that it has to offer.

The Toccoa Riverside Restaurant is just the place you need to hang any night of the week! Dine inside or dine out on the patio for a spectacular view of the river. Enjoy the finest seafood, steaks, and ribs these Georgia mountains have to offer. I love the rustic look of this restaurant and the comfy ambiance. If you’re a fish lover, you can grab a fresh trout dinner, and word of mouth is that the fried catfish is epic! I haven’t had the fried catfish…looks like I need to make a trip to this quaint riverside restaurant to try it out.

Go take a flying leap – really!

If your father told you to go jump off a mountain, would you? We pulled up to this overlook, and I told the boys that I wanted to take a picture of them jumping off of a mountain. “Yeah right dad”, was the response I got from them. We were on a road trip to discover Benton Falls in Tennessee, a place we had never visited before.

The rock wall that I wanted them to jump off of, looked like it was along a sheer cliff, but really the ground on the other side of the wall was only a few feet below. Reluctantly, they got out of the truck, thinking their dad had lost his mind, and they were about to die. After they inspected the wall, their imagination started to run wild with ideas of pictures we could shoot!

Working with the camera angles and their imagination, we came up with a wide assortment of interesting images.

They started having so much fun with the photo shoot, it was hard to take a picture without them smiling at the camera, hey we want these to look realistic. Be afraid, very afraid!

After playing around with taking pictures for a while, we eventually got back on task, going to discover Benton Falls, a water fall we hadn’t visited before. I got back in the truck and continued driving along the ridgeline to arrive at our destination.

Hiking to the waterfalls was an easy hike, with a very gentle grade on a good path. The kids were supercharged about looking for things to photograph, so we were finely tuned to find things to take pictures of. I never before today had allowed the boys to use my camera, but today was a great day to let them learn.

We eventually made it to the water falls and it was definitely worth the hike, the view was breathtaking! We had the perfect light, late afternoon, and the whole scene was magical.

After we hiked out and got back to the truck, the sun was fading fast, but the boys had some more ideas for more photos, so we headed back to the overlook.

Matthew had a great idea for a video shot, but it was almost too dark to film it. We shot it anyway, I call it, “Brotherly Love”

When you come to the Blue Ridge Mountains for your vacation getaway, take time to venture out and discover new things, engage your children to be creative and add to your adventure, you might be surprised as I was. Looking back on this mini-road trip, it was one of my favorite.

Saturday in the Snow

Wow what a weekend! If you were fortunate enough to be visiting Blue Ridge, Georgia this weekend, Mother Nature surprised everyone with a day of non-stop snow. This is what snow lovers have been waiting on since winter arrived in November. This is one time I couldn’t possibly be mad at the weather channel for not getting it right. The snow came out of nowhere and before everyone knew it, there she was in all of her frigid glory. As I attempted to give it my best shot arriving safely to the post office and wrapping up some last minute errands, I knew I needed to make my way home before the roads became too much of a challenge. But here she was; the snow had made her appearance and it was time for hot chocolate and sleds.

The snow flakes were getting larger, and soon became the size of dimes as they grazed the windshield of my truck. The snow was now showing its authority and I was glad to see the end of my driveway. It just goes to show you….the Mountains are always full of magical surprises. You never know when Mother Nature will show up in all of her splendor. There’s nothing like white powdery snow falling outside your picture window; there’s something to be said for the view itself, but add a warm fire, some hot chocolate, and a day of sledding down some hills and you have the recipe for the perfect day in the mountains!

Now…just imagine if you were here in a cozy cabin when the snow made its debut! Although it’s hard to predict when or if the snow will arrive just in time for your visit, you just never know. That’s why I say if you’re one who wants to experience winter wonderland in the North Georgia Mountains, you can watch the weather reports or just come on up and take a chance. Either way, whether it snows or not-the mountains will always be a menagerie of gifts from Mother Nature. There’s always something to see and beauty to behold whether it’s snowing or not. It just turns out this time that snow was on the menu for the second day of February, 3013.

So…what did we do with all the snow that graced my yard? We played! There were sleds and snowball fights as fingers and toes came close to being numb. There were snow boots lined up inside my back door. There was gourmet coffee, good eating, and worn out bodies as even us older folk played hard; our bodies experiencing temporary amnesia. I’ve lived in a few places where I experienced snow, but there’s nothing like a Saturday in the snow in the Blue Ridge Mountains!

By the next day she was gone. Remnants of the magical day remain here and there. Even though the snow is gone, I can still look outside my window and see the mountains off in the distance. There is still much beauty to enjoy and more surprises stored up for another Saturday here in these hills.
